Saturday I raced in the Summer Series #4 5k, my first race since the Mountains to Beach Half Marathon back in May. After a break I knew that this wouldn't be my fastest race ever but I was excited to get out there and compete. I was also pretty curious to see exactly where I was at with my fitness although I had a pretty good idea. On Monday I did a 4 x 1 mile workout with 2 min jogging rests at about 5:30 and it was really hard. That workout told me I would be right around that pace for the 5k.
The race started at 6:30 so I left early by myself and Allison came with the kids a little bit later to cheer. I warmed up on the course and I was a little scared how tired I was after that. I think that is just how every run feels here in the summer. I did strides and some drills and I could tell by the sweating that I was definitely warmed up enough. I knew I wanted to take it easy in the beginning so I did just that. The first 1/2 mile felt really easy and I was probably in 30th place. There were a ton of high school kids in the race and they all go out fast. I hit the first mile in 5:28 and I felt pretty decent. I had passed quite a few people by then and I was sticking to my buddy Ricardo who is one of the top masters runners around here. I ran right behind him for much of the first two miles. My lack of fitness showed up around two miles. I began to tire and slow down just after hitting the second mile in 5:28. The last mile was a struggle and the last straight away seemed incredibly long. Ricardo had pulled away from a little bit in the last mile despite my best efforts to stick with him. I ended with a decent finish but I just didn't have any significant turnover the entire race. I can't call this a bad race because I feel like I did pretty close to the best I could with my current fitness. It always feels good when you give it your all in a race. I finished in 12th place with a 17:03. It was great to cool down with friends I hadn't seen for a while and catch up with a ton of people after the race. I loved that the kids got to come out and watch too. It seems like that it getting easier to do now. I have always liked doing this race and I enjoyed it once again. Well organized and a good time as usual.
The last couple of days I have been annoyed with my time because it feels so far from where I was just a couple of months ago. I am excited to put in the work though and I guess I needed the break to get that feeling back. I have a long way to go but I am looking forward to the challenge.
